Indicators of Urine Color
Of urine colors are the various shades of yellow in the following order: straw-yellow, citron-yellow, blond, flame-yellow, fiery-yellow (similar to saffron, which is saturated yellow), saffron-yellow (similar to blond, also called bright red). All after the citron-yellow indicate heat, differ according to their degree, and may result from hard movement [exercise], pain, hunger, and thirst.
Yellow shades are followed by the shades of red such as reddish-brown, rosy, dark red, and blackish-red, and they all indicate the dominance of blood; however, a tilt toward saffron indicates yellow bile. A tendency toward darkness points out blood dominance. The fiery-yellow is a better indicator of heat than the red or black-red as the yellow bile itself is warmer than blood.
Urine color in acute burning diseases [i.e., excessively hot fevers] tends to be saffronlike and fiery, therefore, if the texture is light it indicates maturity that has started and is not fully obvious in the texture; if the yellowness becomes intense toward fieriness, or its end, then the heat has increased; on the other hand, a bright-blond indicates clarity and decrease of heat.
In acute hemorrhagic diseases, the urine may be as red as blood without the rupture of a vessel, which is rather indicative of extreme fullness of blood. If the urine comes out little by little and is associated with a foul odor it is a dangerous sign of possible blood accumulation in the cavities. The worst of this urine is the thinnest in color, condition, and texture. A large quantity of urination has a good prognosis in acute and mixed fevers because it is indicative of a healing crisis and recovery, except if the urine becomes thinner before a healing crisis; then it is indicative of a relapse, and also if it gradually thins after a healing crisis.
In jaundice, it is better when the urine is dark red to almost black, permanently stains the clothes, and is more in quantity. Thus, if the urine of jaundice is white or slightly reddish and the disease remains the same, it is feared that edema may develop. Starvation colors urine and substantially increases the intensity of the color.
Shades of green include, in this order, pistachio-green, verdigris, sky-green, emerald-green, and leek-green. Pistachio-green is indicative of cold, and so are those that have green, except the verdigris and leek-green because they indicate a severe charring. However, the leek-green is safer than verdigris, and the latter after fatigue indicates convulsion.
Among children, the green urine denotes convulsion. Their sky-green urine is an indicator of severe cold, and most of the time is preceded by green urine. It has been said that it is also signifying poisoning, and if the urine has sediment then the prognosis is good, otherwise death is a possibility. The verdigris urine is very good indicator of damage.
Shades of black include a black color that comes from saffron-colored urine, such as in jaundice, and it indicates the condensation of yellow bile and its charring, or the black bile develops from yellow bile, indicating jaundice.
